John Michael Baldonado always knew he wanted to be in the tech industry, even taking STEM tracks at senior high school. He had planned on going into college, but when his dad’s business went bankrupt, it left them struggling financially, which changed everything for him.
His family struggled, but he refused to give up on his dreams. So John tried KodeGo’s classes and pursued the online tech boot camp of Globe 917Ventures’s program “Kodego,” which offers short-term courses without any upfront payment so students can pay by working off their percentage in income following graduation from these programs.
“Fortunately, nabigyan ako ng opportunity ni KodeGo to hone my skills. I didn’t pursue college. Naging praktikal ako sa buhay. Mas okay na mag-work muna. Since pandemic, ‘yung business ni Papa natamaan so financially unstable kami,” he said.
John made a good decision when he decided to join KodeGo. His decision led him on the path of an exciting career, and before long, John was offered multiple jobs by their team even though it was not yet graduation day! Now at his current company, they promoted him into development lead with great speed too – Six months later!!
He shared his perspective on why KodeGo is an excellent place for beginners who want to enter the IT industry. The lessons are beginner-friendly, he said, and easy enough even if you’ve never done any programming before.
His positive experience in KodeGo prompted him to inspire his father, who had been resistant at first but eventually joined too.
Vince Yamat from 917 Ventures said, “This aligns with our support for the UN Sustainable Development Goals, which fosters innovation and infrastructure as economic drivers.” This also highlights partnerships towards achieving these goals that are relevant throughout all SDG priorities–inclusive growth can happen when we work together!
“As with all our ventures, our vision for KodeGo is to give Filipinos an accessible upskilling platform that will equip them with the necessary training and make them more competitive in the IT industry,” Yamat said.
Yamat is working to significantly increase the number of young people who become front-end, back end or full-stack web developers. The program will provide extensive hands-on experience through peer programming and real-world projects with their fellow students after undergoing intensive tech boot camps. They have then matched up accordingly for potential employers.
KodeGo is an idea taken in by the 917Ventures program for promising ventures. The company plans to offer tech and non-tech courses in the future, focusing on coding skills that will help people find jobs or start their businesses.
Last year, the startup secured SG$30K and recently landed a spot among the top six finalists at the Singtel Group Future Makers Program. This regional social innovation program supports promising startups with innovative technology solutions that help address some of society’s most pressing challenges, including healthcare issues in vulnerable communities across the Asia Pacific region!
